Job Summary Phlebotomist III, while being independent and successful at performing venipuncture and skin puncture on a wide range of patients, is also able to aide in the training of the Phlebotomist I in all aspects of the Laboratory.
Phlebotomists are responsible for an interpersonal relationship with the patient who they are meant to collect blood samples from.
It’s the duty of a phlebotomist to make patients feel relaxed and protected while collecting a blood sample.
The ability to explain the blood drawing process to patients and to show a comforting attitude toward patients creates an amiable environment.
The Phlebotomist insures proper identification, labeling and transporting of blood samples and other body fluids.
They are responsible for keeping the work environment clean as well as properly disposing of contaminated supplies.
Job Duties Performs the duties of a Phlebotomist I and II as per Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
Exhibits accuracy in specimen identification, labeling, accessioning, processing, and patient billing.
Recognizes and resolves discrepancies as appropriate.
Evaluates specimen suitability and acceptability.
Serves as a resource for Phlebotomist and Lab Assistants for problem solving.
Accurately processes specimens for analysis according to prescribed procedure and provides for timely transport of the specimen to the appropriate specimen processing or analyzing location.
Insures appropriate levels of reagents and supplies for point of care are maintained.
Assist the Technical Specialist to investigative issues including Morning Report, lost in lab specimens, missing specimens.
Assist the Technical Specialist to complete: Personal Protective Equipment audits; competencies; remedial training; education.
Serves as a preceptor for training of new staff and students.
In the absence of the Technical Specialist, serves as the technical resource for Phlebotomist and Lab Assistant and knows and abides by the policies and procedures including compliance policies.
Provides phlebotomy coverage as required to Community Practice Clinics, skilled nursing facilities, or performs in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
Successful completion of initial and subsequent competency exams required.
Work is typically performed in a clinical environment.
Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.

Position Details As a phlebotomist, you'll support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services.
At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs.
Supporting a varied patient population, you’ll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.
There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.
We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized.
Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III.
We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department! Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered! Military experience will be considered.
US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.
