Position Summary: Helps develop and implement infection control policies to help control the spread of infections as directed by the DON and ensures that all facility personnel are educated on and actively practice proper infection control techniques in compliance with all federal, state, and local guidelines, standards, and regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Monitors resident infections and effectiveness of treatment, documents findings monthly.
Identifies infections and with the input of nursing staff and attending physician, attempts to identify whether the infection developed in the facility.
Determine Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) to identify and correct breaches in infection control practices and to prevent further spread of infection.
Monitors all culture reports.
Does monthly survey of the facility for proper infection control procedures.
Reports contagious infections to the State Department of Health as required by regulations and as directed by the D.
O.
N.
Attends and reports to the Quality Assurance Committee.
Conducts quarterly infection control meetings.
Monitors isolation techniques and equipment as needed.
Monitors universal precautions and handwashing.
Monitors MRSA and Vancomycin in-house and prior to admissions and discharges.
Monitors hepatitis injections for employees at risk; maintains records of the same.
Monitors Mantoux and flu vaccines on the residents and staff; maintains records of the same.
Assists the Staff Development Coordinator with related in-services and/or training.
Monitors catheters and reasons.
Attends/participates in job-related continuing educational programs, in-services, and meetings.
Maintains and updates Infection Control policies at least yearly and/or as needed.
Monitors and maintains records of infections or prevention for all staff.
Plans, develops, organizes, evaluates, coordinates, and directs the infection control program in compliance with all federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations which govern the facility with respect to the same.
Develops, periodically updates, and maintains infection control policies and procedures.
Makes regular rounds of the facility to monitor for utilization of proper environmental sanitation procedures, universal precautions, and overall supervision of isolation practices.
Provides instruction and direction to all appropriate personnel in following established infection control procedures including but not limited to, Exposure Control Plan, universal precautions, aseptic technique, and isolation.
Ensures that residents with suspected and known communicable or infectious diseases are placed on appropriate infection control/isolation precautions.
Reviews assessments, plans of treatment and daily nursing notes of those residents on isolation precautions to ensure adequacy of care and the resident’s response or lack of response with respect to the same.
Performs performance improvement functions related to infection control.
Ensures all staff are educated and knowledgeable on proper infection control techniques.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Maintains a safe work environment and exhibits safe work practices, assuring resident safety.
Education, Experience and Skills Required: Must possess a current Pennsylvania RN license.
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies and the public.
Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
Physical Demands: Mobility, reaching, bending, grasping, fine hand coordination, hearing, ability to read and write, ability to verbally communicate with staff and residents, and ability to remain calm under stress.
Occasional climbing, stepping downward and crawling.
Must be able to move throughout the building and grounds as needed throughout the day; must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
good communication skills required.
Environmental Conditions: Works in skilled nursing facility.
Hard floor surfaces.
Occasional wet floor.
Is subject to interruptions.
Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel and visitors; Works beyond normal working hours when necessary; Attends and participates in continuing educational programs and meetings.
